Mesh Mashup - Refinement

This week, we discussed our mashup ideas with our classmates and decided on the best one to refine. My peers all seemed to love/hate the idea of "Odour," a mashup of a nose and a pile of poop. I felt this combination had strong juxtaposition and was very clear and simple to understand. I decided to move forward and refine it.

Here is my original, quick mashup:

My classmates all seemed to agree on a few key points. The poop is too fake looking, should be less "perfect," more of the nose should be visible, and it should be clearer that it's a nose. I agreed with this feedback, and made a note to find a better poop model. Additionally, a couple suggested I could make it look more gross. One classmate suggested adding a really gross booger. Challenge accepted!

Refining the model

First off, I needed to find myself a better poop model. The one I had previously found was too perfect, and not realistic enough. I managed to find a collection of poop models on Thingiverse, which included the following models:

The original files can be found here.

I also used the same nose model as I did in my mockup:

This model can be found here.

I used Meshmixer to combine both poop models to make a messy pile, and then added the nose to one side. I smoothed out all the joined areas and added texture with the draw brush to further blend the nose in with the poop.

What does this have to do with remix culture?

This project is a great example of remix culture. I have taken and remixed 3D models made by other people and combined them to make a new model with a new purpose. Alone, the poop may have been a fun gag to print, or maybe used in a 3D scene for a video game. With a human nose added, it becomes an uncomfortable mashup sculpture. Juxtaposition is invoked by placing a human nose with a smelly, gross object to create a physical reaction in the audience.

In order to continue the cycle of creation present in read/write culture, we will be uploading these objects online for other people to use. Who knows - maybe someone will remix this into a new project!
